MATHEMATICS COURSES

COURSE TITLE                                    Applied Mathematics I
RECOMMENDED GRADE LEVEL    9-10
PRE-REQUISITE                                   Recommendation of teacher
CREDIT                                                 10
DURATION                                          1st & 2nd semester

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    Applied Math I is for the student who does not feel they are ready for Algebra I.  The material in this class will be a review of the skills needed to be successful in both algebra and Geometry.  This will include an intensive review of solving equations, geometry terms, arithmetic skills, and math terminology.  Skills will be presented in an application format when possible.  Various state standards will also be addressed.

COURSE TITLE                                     Algebra I
RECOMMENDED GRADE LEVEL     9th or 10th grade
PRE-REQUISITE                                    Successfully passed Pre-Algebra or instructor’s
                                                                 permission
CREDITS                                                10
DURATION                                           1st & 2nd semester

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    This course is designed to focus on more complex situations using real numbers.  It includes an initial focus on the basic operations with integers and extends into a thorough analysis of solving equations and their applications.  Other key points of focus include simplifying expressions containing polynomials, factoring polynomials and applications, simplifying algebraic fractions and an introduction to linear equations and systems.

COURSE TITLE                                    Applied Mathematics II
RECOMMENDED GRADE LEVEL    10 - 11
PRE-REQUISITE                                   None
CREDIT                                                 10
DURATION                                           1st & 2nd semester

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    As in Applied Mathematics I, the main focus of this course is problem solving and real world application.  The units will cover more specific topics and the level of difficulty appropriately increases.  The use of fundamentals such as conversions, data organization, graph interpretation and estimation skills is stressed throughout the entire course.

COURSE TITLE                                     Geometry
RECOMMENDED GRADE LEVEL     10 - 11
PRE-REQUISITE                                    Algebra I
CREDITS                                                10
DURATION                                            1st & 2nd semester

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    Geometry will develop a student’s knowledge of two and three-dimensional figures and their properties along with the ability to think of these figures in terms of symmetry, congruence, and similarity.  The ability to use the Pythagorean Theorem and special right triangles will be developed.  The student will also be expected to draw geometrical figures and various other diagrams in solving problems.  Coordinate geometry and the basic trigonometric functions will be covered.

COURSE TITLE                                     Algebra II
RECOMMENDED GRADE LEVEL     10 – 11 - 12
PRE-REQUISITE                                    Algebra I and/or Geometry
CREDITS                                                 10
DURATION                                            1st & 2nd semester

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    Algebra II will continue to develop the students’ skill in solving equations, inequalities, and simplifying algebraic expressions using both negative and rational exponents. Coordinate geometry, linear equations, irrational and complex numbers, quadratic functions, and graph theory are also covered.  An emphasis will be placed on higher level skills and understanding.  Although not required for graduation, Algebra II is a must for the college bound student.

COURSE TITLE                                     Accelerated Senior Math
RECOMMENDED GRADE LEVEL     12
PRE-REQUISITE                                    “A” average in Algebra II
                                                                  Instructor’s approval is recommended
CREDITS                                                 10
DURATION                                            1st & 2nd semester

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    This is a college preparatory class and includes an intense and accelerated review from Algebra, Trigonometry, and Analytic Geometry that are necessary for success in Calculus.  Other topics covered would include probability and statistics.  The calculus portion of this class will include a fundamental introduction to limits, derivatives, implicit differentiation, as well as integral calculus.  A student enrolling in this class should be highly motivated with a well developed aptitude in mathematics.  This class is primarily for those interested in pursuing a technical field of study at the post-secondary level.

COURSE TITLE                                     Pre-Calculus
RECOMMENDED GRADE LEVEL    12
PRE-REQUISITE                                   Algebra II
CREDITS                                                10
DURATION                                           1st & 2nd semester

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    Pre-Calculus is a solid review of all algebraic skills introduced thus far.  Functions, inequalities, exponents, logarithms, and polynomials are all reinforced early in this class.  Trigonometry functions and their identities are covered as well as polar graphing and vector operations.  Probability, statistics, sequences, and series will be covered and a brief introduction to calculus will be covered if time allows.  This fourth year of math is for the college bound student who wishes to strengthen and expand their math background in preparation for their chosen field of study.
