COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    English I involves the study of writing, grammar, literature and communication.  Students of English I will respond to writing prompts using the writing process.  The Six Traits of Writing will be analyzed and used as the model for development and assessment of writing.  Students explore different modes of writing while focusing on descriptive and persuasive essays.  Grammar lessons will be taught in conjunction with writing.  Literature in English I will include genres of short stories, novels, drama, and poetry.
Nine weeks will concentrate on basic speech communication skills.  During this unit, students will research, write, and present informative, persuasive, and demonstrative speeches.
            Students of English I are required 10 ARP points each quarter.

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    English 9 students read various types of short stories and learn various spelling, dictionary, and study skills.  Students will read longer works of literature.
            Along with reading, students work on vocabulary, reading comprehension, and expression of thought.  Students will do various writing assignments and work on peer editing, and the 6-Traits.
            Students give three major speeches throughout the year (demonstrative, persuasive, and informative) and present various types of short oral presentations.
            Students will fill out applications for jobs and research careers.

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    This course includes basic grammar study of sentences, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.  Supplementary materials such as magazines, films, and worksheets deal with skills in reading, listening and critical thinking.  Several novels are read such as The Giver, The Watsons Go To Birmingham—1963, Out of the Dust, And Then There Were None, and Killing Mr. Griffin.  A supplemental textbook is also used.
Students acquired new vocabulary through accumulative vocabulary sentences and quizzes.
 Students of English 10 are required 10 AR points each quarter.

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    In this survey, students will read types of literature and selections from each major literary period as well as looking at a historical introduction and studying changes in the language in English literature.  It will include poetry, essays, biography, short stories, drama, and a novel.  The primary text is anthologies, Literature and The Language Arts: British Tradition, but supplemental readings and the British novel Jane Eyrie, or Great Expectations will be used.  Poetic devices, types of literature, vocabulary word structure, composition, and grammar skills will be emphasized along with the reading.  Twenty-five ARP (Accelerated Reading Program) points are required each semester.

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    American Literature involves the study of American authors, literature, writing, and grammar review.  The course looks at America as it is recorded in literature.  Authors and literature studied may include Poe, Fitzgerald, Steinbeck, Twain and Harper Lee, as well as others.
            Students are also required to write persuasive essays and a documented research paper.  The Six Traits of Writing will be analyzed and used as the model for development and assessment of writing.
            Students of American Literature are required 10 ARP points each quarter.

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    This course includes reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary study.   Materials include an American literature anthology with short stories, articles, and poems; novels Of Mice and Men and The Pearl, read as a class; Basic English Composition, grammar; and weekly vocabulary quizzes.  Students will also be assessed according to the state standards.  Grammar emphasis is on sentences and parts of speech.   Twenty-five ARP points are required each semester

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    This course includes reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary.  Materials include a World Literature anthology with short stories, articles, and poems; the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, read as a class; and weekly vocabulary lessons.  Twenty-five ARP points are required each semester.  Grammar emphasis is on usage and punctuation.

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    This course is an Advanced Placement English course for college bound students, which focuses on literature and composition.  The quarters will each focus on a different genre of literature:  poetry, drama, novel, and short story, and on critically analyzing these genres through classroom discussion, projects, and compositions.  Twenty-five AR points are required per semester, with the additional requirement of reading books from a college-bound reading list.  Upon completion of the course in May, an examination may be taken (for a fee), and the results are sent to a college the student has designated.  The college decides, on the basis of the student’s exam score, whether to grant credit, exemption, or both, according to that college’s academic policy.  (NOTE:  Not all colleges give credit for AP, but it is a widely-recognized program.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    Set in a workshop like atmosphere, students will engage in daily, extensive reading and writing projects.  Individualized lessons and goals will help create the curriculum.  Students will read and chart their progress through a dialogue journal; while developing a writing portfolio during writing days.  The semester will culminate in the self-publishing of student generated writing.

All progress will be strictly monitored.  Assessment will include self, peer, and teacher evaluations.

COURSE DESCRIPTION                                    This course is developed as a continuance of Drama.  Speech I is an introductory course focusing on public speaking.  Speech organization and research techniques are taught to prepare the students for various speeches.  These include informative, persuasive, demonstration, extemporaneous, and interpretive speaking.  Cooperation and participation are two essential student qualities in Speech I.  This class is only a 2nd semester class.
