LANGUAGE ARTS COURSESCOURSE TITLE English I COURSE DESCRIPTION English I involves the study of writing, grammar, literature and communication. Students of English I will respond to writing prompts using the writing process. The Six Traits of Writing will be analyzed and used as the model for development and assessment of writing. Students explore different modes of writing while focusing on descriptive and persuasive essays. Grammar lessons will be taught in conjunction with writing. Literature in English I will include genres of short stories, novels, drama, and poetry. COURSE TITLE English 9 COURSE DESCRIPTION English 9 students read various types of short stories and learn various spelling, dictionary, and study skills. Students will read longer works of literature.
COURSE TITLE English 10 COURSE TITLE English Literature COURSE DESCRIPTION In this survey, students will read types of literature and selections from each major literary period as well as looking at a historical introduction and studying changes in the language in English literature. It will include poetry, essays, biography, short stories, drama, and a novel. The primary text is anthologies, Literature and The Language Arts: British Tradition, but supplemental readings and the British novel Jane Eyrie, or Great Expectations will be used. Poetic devices, types of literature, vocabulary word structure, composition, and grammar skills will be emphasized along with the reading. Twenty-five ARP (Accelerated Reading Program) points are required each semester. COURSE TITLE American Literature COURSE DESCRIPTION American Literature involves the study of American authors, literature, writing, and grammar review. The course looks at America as it is recorded in literature. Authors and literature studied may include Poe, Fitzgerald, Steinbeck, Twain and Harper Lee, as well as others.
COURSE TITLE Exploratory Literature I COURSE DESCRIPTION This course includes reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary study. Materials include an American literature anthology with short stories, articles, and poems; novels Of Mice and Men and The Pearl, read as a class; Basic English Composition, grammar; and weekly vocabulary quizzes. Students will also be assessed according to the state standards. Grammar emphasis is on sentences and parts of speech. Twenty-five ARP points are required each semester COURSE TITLE Exploratory Literature II COURSE DESCRIPTION This course includes reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary. Materials include a World Literature anthology with short stories, articles, and poems; the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, read as a class; and weekly vocabulary lessons. Twenty-five ARP points are required each semester. Grammar emphasis is on usage and punctuation. COURSE TITLE AP English 12 COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is an Advanced Placement English course for college bound students, which focuses on literature and composition. The quarters will each focus on a different genre of literature: poetry, drama, novel, and short story, and on critically analyzing these genres through classroom discussion, projects, and compositions. Twenty-five AR points are required per semester, with the additional requirement of reading books from a college-bound reading list. Upon completion of the course in May, an examination may be taken (for a fee), and the results are sent to a college the student has designated. The college decides, on the basis of the student’s exam score, whether to grant credit, exemption, or both, according to that college’s academic policy. (NOTE: Not all colleges give credit for AP, but it is a widely-recognized program.) COURSE TITLE Reading / Writing Workshop All progress will be strictly monitored.
